Gcina Makhoba, the World Boxing
Federation (WBF) International
Super Flyweight Champion, put on
a destructive performance when
making his first title-defense
on Saturday night, February 27,
at the Portuguese Hall in
Durban, South Africa.
Clearly ready for bigger things,
Makhoba stopped fellow
KwaZulu-Natal resident Thulani
Gumede in the third round,
improving his professional
record to 6-1-1 (2). The
challenger falls to 7-2-1 (3).
Showing class, maturity and
power, Makhoba went straight to
work from the first bell and
clearly won the first two
rounds. Gumede tried his best to
turn the tide, but always seemed
a step behind.
In round three, the champion
landed a perfect body-shot which
made Gumede turn his back,
grimacing in pain, forcing
referee Elroy Marshall to jump
in and wave the fight off at
0:48. It was later revealed that
Gumede had broken a rip.
The fight headlined a card
promoted by Starline Boxing
Promotions.
