The Vibrant Sports Studio in Cape Town, South Africa set the scene for a night of professional boxing, Friday April 19, promoted by Jackie Brice Boxing Promotions and headlined by a fight for the World Boxing Federation (WBF) All Africa Super Flyweight title.
In a clash of South African compatriots, hot prospect Lwando Mngambi came of age as he passed his toughest test to date against the rugged Lebogang Pilane to win the vacant title.
Many rounds were close, but Mngambi did enough to edge most of them, while Pilane tried his best to take him out of his rhythm and find a deciding punch before the fight went to the scorecards.
Judges Oscar Noels, Elroy Marshall and Sipho Ndongeni scored the fight 98-92, 98-92 and 99-91 for the undefeated Mngambi.
The new WBF All Africa Super Flyweight champion took his record to 6-0 (2), and Pilane drops to a misleading 6-8 (3).
A planned fight for the vacant WBF All Africa Heavyweight title between South African Joshua Pretorius and Shafic Kiwanuka from Uganda was cancelled on Thursday as the latter had to pull out due to a hand-injury.
