Unbeaten WBF International
champion Noni Tenge
extended her streak to eight
wins, all but one by knockout
(!), against a solitary draw
when she overcame an extremely
tough and durable Gifty
Amanua Ankrah from Ghana to
win the World Boxing
Federation's ladies world
welterweight title last Friday,
December 18.
Ankrah arrived in East London
with a formidable record, never
having been stopped and having
already taken the highly
talented South African the full
10-round distance in their
previous encounter for the
lesser title last January.
Boxing behind the jab, Tenge
this time outclassed the game
girl from Accra, throwing all
the punches in the book. In the
ninth round, Noni rocked Gifty
and had her helpless against the
ropes although the Ghanaian
refused to go down. Wisely,
referee Siya Vabuza stopped the
fight and with it crowned Tenge
South Africa’s first female
world champion. Noni produced an
outstanding performance and is
arguably at this point in time,
the finest female welterweight
in the world.
For the record, the judges were
Allan Matikane, Simphiwe Mbini
and Lulama Mtya with Phakamile
Jacobs acting as supervisor.
World Boxing Federation
president Howard Goldberg was
one of the VIPs in attendance at
the packed Orient Theatre in
East London, South Africa.
