Tanzanian Yona Segu, 19-10-2
(6), and Malawian Hannock Phiri,
10-2 (9), are set to decide the
vacant World Boxing Federation
(WBF) All Africa Lightweight
title on Friday April 9 at
Ubungo Plaza in Dar Es Salaam.
Originally scheduled for March
19 but postponed due to the
passing of Tanzanian president
John Magufuli, the fight,
promoted by Mopao Entertainment,
will be broadcast live by Azam
TV.
Segu (30) is a former holder of
the title, having won it in a
rematch against South African
David Rajuili in September of
2018 after losing their first
encounter, also for the title,
by close majority decision.
Since then he has come up short
against former WBO World
Champion Terry Flanagan and
Armenian contender Vahram
Vardanyan on away soil, but now
he is ready to resurrect his
career by reclaiming the WBF
title.
In Malawi national champion
Phiri (23) he will face an
ambitious youngster who is
returning to Tanzania for
redemption after losing by split
decision to Cosmas Cheka last
September in a fight for the UBO
International title.
Some, not surprisingly himself
included, felt he deserved the
victory on that night, so he has
every intention of making a
statement against Segu. With
nine of ten victories coming
inside the distance, he is
certainly capable of hurting the
local man if he connects.
Segu vs. Phiri is one of eight
bouts on a show billed “Fist of
the Lions II”.
