One of the best boxers to ever come
out of Kenya, Fatuma Zarika, won the
Interim World Boxing Federation
World Super Featherweight title on
Friday night, October 27, with a
brilliant performance in Nairobi.
Zarika stopped Tanzanian
co-challenger Fatuma Yazidu in the
fourth round after dominating the
first three stanzas and almost
ending matters a round earlier.
The new WBF champion looked sharp
and determined from the start, and
when she hurt Yazidu in round four,
and then pummelled her against the
ropes, referee Wycliffe Marende had
seen enough and stepped in to save
Yazidu from further punishment.
A former WBF and WBC world champion,
Zarika took her professional record
to 34-13-2 (18), almost exactly
twenty years after making her debut
in October of 2003. Tanzanian
national champion Yazidu drops to
20-11-1 (10).
Zarika is now in line to face full
WBF world Super Featherweight
champion Licia Boudersa from France
next year.
