On July 2, German
bantamweight Pia Mazelanik
(12-3-1) will challenge for her
first world title when she faces
Renata Szebeledi for the vacant
WBF crown at an open-air and
free-admission event in Lemgo,
Germany.
A little over a
week ahead of the biggest fight
of her five-year career, the
only 23-years old Mazelanik sat
down with WBF media director
Clive Baum to discuss the fight.
Question: Miss
Mazelanik, your about to fight
for your first world title, the
vacant WBF bantamweight
championship. How do you feel
about that opportunity?
Pia Mazelanik:
I’m really excited about July 2.
To fight and win a world title
is a dream for me and now I’ll
have the chance to fulfill it.
I’m feeling great about this.
Surely, there is some tension
but only as much as it needs to
be.
Q: How is your
preparation going?
Mazelanik: It’s
going really good so far. We
worked hard on conditioning and
quickness; we had some intense
sessions on the mitts and also
great sparring. I’m pleased with
my camp, but we still have a few
days to get even better and get
the final-touch.
Q: What do you
know about your opponent?
Mazelanik: She is
a southpaw and it’s always
difficult to fight a southpaw.
It’s not easy to find the right
sparring partners because there
are rarely female fighters who
are southpaws. She is also a
very experienced fighter, she
had a lot of professional boxing
but also kickboxing bouts. I
can’t underestimate her. She
deserves this world title shot
as much as I do.
Q: Is it
something special for you to be
in the main event at an open-air
boxing event?
Mazelanik: It is
indeed special for me to be a
part of this event. I really
like the concept of it and I’m
completely sure that it will be
a great event with a terrific
atmosphere. To fight open-air
makes it even more special.
Q: At age 23, you
have been a professional boxer
for five years. Why did you make
the move to the professionals so
early?
Mazelanik: I
started with kickboxing and had
six amateur boxing fights.
Afterwards I became the chance
to turn professional and I just
wanted to take it.
Q: What are your
goals, your dreams in boxing?
Mazelanik: My
biggest dream is to be part of a
world championship bout and
naturally to win the world
title. I’m thoroughly focused on
that because I’m very close to
this goal. I’ll see what happens
afterwards.
Q: Can you tell
us about your fighting style?
Mazelanik: That’s
difficult. Well, I’m a good
technician and I fight clean. I
also worked a lot on my punching
power and speed to be even
better and more precise.
Q: Female boxing
in Germany is in a crisis right
now. How do you notice this?
Mazelanik: You
can notice the crisis if you
take a look at the media. There
is much less interest in female
boxing than it was a year ago.
But other than that, the female
boxing scene is doing well.
There are many active and
talented fighters out there.
Q: Besides boxing
and training, what do you like
to do in the meantime?
Mazelanik: I have
a 40 hour-a-week job as a
qualified dental employee and
when I have the time I love to
go to the cinema to watch the
latest movies. I also like to
spend time with my friends and
family and naturally, as a
woman, I like to go shopping.
Q: Do you want to
say anything in closing?
Mazelanik: I’m
really excited about July 2 and
I’m convinced it will be a great
event with terrific fights, a
enjoyable program and a
thrilling world title bout. |
