On July 23, the vacant WBF
Women’s World Flyweight Title
with be on the line in
Guadalajara, Mexico, in a battle
between former world champion
Irma Sanchez and up and coming
prospect Carlota Santos.
The show at the Coliseo Olimpico
de la UG is being promoted by
one of Mexico’s premiere
promoters in Hector Garcia’s HG
Boxing.
One of the night’s highlights
will be the showdown between the
23-years old Sanchez (19-5-1, 5
KO’s) and Santos (5-2-3, 4
KO’s), who is three years older
but less experienced as a
professional fighter.
Irma Sanchez was born and raised
in Guadalajara and has high
hopes to win another world title
in her hometown. She captured
the IBF light flyweight title in
January but lost a razor thin
split decision in her first
defense in April against Jessica
Chavez.
In the past, she constantly
fought between light and super
flyweight, but is now solely
focused on becoming the world’s
best 112-pounder. Because of
her experience at a world class
level and her boxing skills,
Sanchez is regarded the favorite
on July 23.
However, Carlota Santos, from
Panama, can not be overlooked.
She lost two of her first three
bouts, both by four-round split
decision, but is unbeaten since.
She is regarded as one of the
bigger punchers in her weight
division and that alone makes
her a dangerous foe for anyone
at flyweight. In her last outing
in April (only one week after
Sanchez lost her title), she
stopped Ruby Lozana in the third
round to secure a world
championship bout. Although she
has to go into the lion’s den on
July 23, Santos is fully
prepared to archive her dream
and become a world champion.
Besides the Sanchez-Santos bout,
there will be two more
championship bouts at the HG
Boxing event. Light flyweight
Ulises Solis will defend his IBF
belt against Omar Romero and
super featherweight Jorge Solis
will put his WBA interim strap
on the line against an opponent
to be named. |
