Poland’s rising cruiserweight
star Pawel Kolodziej reached the
so far high point of his
unbeaten career, winning the
vacant World Boxing Federation
crown in stunning fashion this
past weekend.
Fighting in front of a packed
and ecstatic hometown crowd in
Strzelce Opolskie on Saturday
night (actually it was already
Sunday when the first bell
rang), March 20, the 25-year-old
Kolodziej (90,6 kg) pulverized
England’s Mark Krence (90,1 kg)
with a peach of a right to the
chin in the third round of this
scheduled 12.
Although a stunned Krence, just
about to feel his way into the
fight, up righted himself to
barely beat referee Grzegorz
Malenda’s count, but was
overwhelmed immediately
afterwards by Kolodziej, forcing
the intervention of the third
man in the ring.
The Pole had won the opener, but
from the second round onwards,
Krence found his distance better
– until the devastating and at
that moment unexpected end
occurred.
Now ranked # 12 in the world by
boxrec, new WBFed world champion
Pawel Kolodziej, hailing from
the south Polish city of Krynica
Zdroj, brought his outstanding
record to 25-0 (14). He turned
professional just a day after
his 20th birthday in
September 2004 and had already
won the WBC Youth title
previously. |
