After winning the World Boxing
Federation North American title
last December, Atlanta’s Paul
“The Truth” Delgado is ready to
step things up on July 21 at the
Buckhead Theatre in his hometown
when he takes on New Yorker Mike
“El Cangri” Ruiz for the vacant
WBF Intercontinental Super
Welterweight championship.
The fight will be the headliner
of a show promoted by Delgado
Boxing Promotions, in
cooperation with Mezereon
Management, that will also
feature a long line of local
up-and-comers on the undercard.
Paul Delgado, 26-11-1 (4), came
up short in a world
title-challenge against Jan
Zaveck in Slovenia last year,
and his quest for a new shot at
world honors was kicked off with
a decisive unanimous decision
over “Modern Day Warrior” Ruben
Galvan for the North American
belt seven months ago.
Winning the Intercontinental
crown on Saturday could bring
him closer to a crack at WBF
World Champion Sebastien Madani
from France, but the 36-year-old
is bound to get a stern
challenge from Ruiz who is ten
years his junior and a bigger
puncher.
For Mike Ruiz, 16-7 (8), it will
be his biggest fight to date.
Luck was not on his side when he
dropped two razor-thin split
decisions to Daniel Sostre and
Martin Wright for the New York
State Welterweight title in 2009
and 2011, and when he knocked
Wright down in the first round
of a rematch and had him hanging
on for dear life but failed to
put him away before losing
another decision for a minor
belt.
In his most recent outing Ruiz,
born in Puerto Rico but fighting
out of Long Island, New York,
travelled to the Dominican
Republic to knock out Basilio
Silva in two rounds this past
March. The Delgado-encounter
will be his first
title-opportunity at Super
Welterweight, and he will surely
be looking to make the most of
it.

Mike Ruiz WBF Intercontinental
Super Welterweight title fight
