Slowly but surely, action for
the World Boxing Federation all
over Europe is picking up and
European Coordinator Olaf
Schroeder credits WBFed
president Howard Goldberg for
giving the impetus:
“A strong and knowledgeable
president is as important as one
who knows how to behave in a
proper manner and Howard
Goldberg is doing a helluva job
in all regards.”
In that context, France is
presenting WBFed championships
over the next couple of months.
It starts with Hassan Azaouagh
going for the International
Bantamweight belt on April 16.
In his hometown of Henin-Beaumont,
the 23-year-old Frenchman meets
Ecuadorian veteran Luis William
Singo from Quito. For both a win
would net them the first title
of any sorts in their
professional careers, so a lot
can be expected from their
meeting.
Next up will be Yvan Mendy
clashing with Laszlo Komjathi on
June 4 with the Intercontinental
lightwelterweight crown on the
line. Mendy has an impressive
record of 18-1 (9) and he will
also enjoy hometown advantage
when he takes on the hardened
Hungarian warhorse Komjathi in
Pont St. Maxence.
It will be youth vs. experience,
with Mendy at 24 years of age
being 10 years younger than the
man from Debrecen. However,
there are few fighters on the
European circuit whose records
read like those of Komjathi, who
has been in the ring with many
champions and world class
operators. |
