Spain’s Aitor “El Diamante”
Nieto is the new World Boxing
Federation Latin Welterweight
Champion after lifting the
vacant title on Friday night,
April 19, at the Florida Arena
in Oviedo, Spain.
In front of an enthusiastic
crowd, Nieto scored a technical
knockout over countryman Sergei
Mba, who didn’t answer the bell
for round eight.
At the time of the stoppage
judges Jose Luis Cancela, Javier
Vasquez Garcia and Juan Ramon
Prieto all had Nieto ahead by
scores of 69-65, 69-65 and
70-66.
In what was a competitive fight,
both men had their moments but
Nieto appeared to be the sharper
boxer on the offensive and as
the rounds went by he took more
and more control of the fight.
In round five Nieto scored a
knockdown, but Mba beat the
count of referee Antonio Casas
and gamely fought back. However,
two rounds later he had had
enough, and retired on his
stool.
With the victory, Nieto captured
his professional careers first
title and improved his record to
9-1 (5). Mba, coming off five
straight victories, fell to
5-5-1 (2).
The fight was promoted by Nestor
Dominguez. |
