For his achievements in 2011, outstanding Mexican ring official Juan José Ramirez was honoured by the World Boxing Federation and received the WBF Referee of the Year award.

Now the 51-year-old from Tijuana gave back to the sport who made him respected the world over by opening a gym for young amateurs and aspiring pros in his hometown.

The WBF in turn donated 1.500,00 US$ to buy equipment and Ramirez was glad for the support, telling WBF Latin America Coordinator Sergio Sotelo, who presented the cheque when visiting the opening ceremony of the gym:

“I wish to thank the World Boxing Federation, and especially President Howard Goldberg, for all the encouragement and recognition I have received. This donation will help to make the gym a focal point in Tijuana for youngsters.”

“This is a great thing for Tijuana and boxing,” said a pleased Sotelo and knowing the determination to succeed in Ramirez, he added: “And it would not surprise me much if one day this new gym produces another Mexican WBF world champion!”.
