Boxing’s original ‘Golden Boy’,
former world light heavyweight
champion Donny Lalonde, has
confirmed to be among the guests
of what will hopefully be a
star-studded line-up at the
upcoming World Boxing Federation
(WBF) World Convention in
Saarbruecken, Germany from
September 5 to 8.
“My mother’s parents are from
Germany, therefore, I am looking
forward very much to come to
that country,” said Lalonde.
The Canadian, who these days
lives in Costa Rica with his
wife Christi, was a matinee idol
in the 80ies and became champion
in 1987, stopping Eddie Davis in
two rounds.
He made one successful defense
against Leslie Stewart (TKO 5),
before featuring in the sport’s
first-ever fight for titles in
two different weight division
(for Lalonde’s light heavy and a
vacant super middle title) when
taking on legendary Sugar Ray
Leonard in what was a million
Dollar affair.
Lalonde put Leonard down in
round four, but succumbed
finally in the ninth round. In
2003, Donny Lalonde retired with
a fine record of 41-5-1 with 33
knockout wins laying testimony
to his huge punching power.
Also among the guest is
Germany’s own Rola El Halabi,
possibly one of the greatest
comeback stories in boxing
history. Rola was an undefeated
champion, when in 2011 just
prior to her entering the ring,
her estranged stepfather forced
his way into her dressing room
and proceeded to shoot bullets
into her hands, feet and knees
before police could detain him.
It seemed to all and everyone
that El Halabi’s promising
career was over at just 26 years
of age before even reaching a
peak. However, with a steely
determination, Rola refused to
give up and cave in – and early
this year, she was astonishingly
back in the ring, contesting the
WBF womens world lightweight
crown. Despite coming short on
the scorecards against a
brilliant Lucia Morelli, Rola El
Halabi staged an improbable
comeback.
This coming August 3, she is
lined up to fight for the WBF
womens world light welterweight
title given up by Holly Holm and
it is not unlikely, Rola will be
a world champion again at the
time of the WBF Convention,
where she intends to also talk
about her book, which describes
the trials and tribulations she
has been through.
“It’s absolutely wonderful to
see a great champion like Donny
Lalonde and an outstanding
fighter like Rola El Halabi
coming to grace our convention,”
said World Boxing Federation
president Howard Goldberg, “and
we are sure that many more
champions will be on hand,
making this an unforgettable
event!”.
