Belgian veteran Ismail Abdoul
put on a clinical performance to
capture the World Boxing
Federation Intercontinental
Cruiserweight title from
defending champion Ben Nsafoah
on Saturday night.
Boxing in front of a capacity
crowd of around 1000 spectators
in a big tent in Ninove, a short
drive from his hometown of Gent,
Abdoul fought an almost perfect
fight and had answers for
anything Nsafoah could offer.
Nsafoah was deducted a point for
holding in round five, and was
hurt from a perfect left hook by
Abdoul at the bell to end the
eighth, and in the end there was
no doubt whatsoever who would
win the decision.
Judges Jean-Marcel Nartz, Brahim
Ait Aadi and Hugues Hellebaut
scored it 120-107, 120-108 and
119-111 in favor of the
home-man.
With the victory Ismail Abdoul
improved his remarkable
professional record to 49-27-2
(19), while German-based
Ghanaian Nsafoah goes home with
a 15-9-2 (8) ledger. Promoter
was
Ezzedine Laggoune.
On the same night, at the
Graceland Casino in Secunda,
South Africa, two local
favorites came unstuck when
Evans Mbamba and Gabisile
Tshabalala failed to win WBF
World titles.
Mbamba, was in a tough fight
with Mexican Mario Briones for
the vacant WBF World Super
Bantamweight crown. Both
fighters showed their true
class, and both had moments
where they, for a period, seemed
in control of the action.
With a packed arena enjoying the
action, Mbamba had his best
moments countering the
aggressive Briones, while the
visitor often scored well to the
body on the attack.
After twelve rounds of boxing
the fight was declared a draw
with scores of 114-114, 114-114
and 117-111, and both fighters
immediately expressed their wish
for a quick rematch.
With this result Mbamba´s record
now stands at 18-3-1 (9), and
Briones goes to 24-3-2 (18).
In the co-feature, fighting for
the vacant WBF Womens World
Featherweight title, Gabisile
Tshabalala was dismantled by
Australia’s Shannon Shannon
O'Connell, who impressively
stopped the previously
undefeated South African
national champion in seven
rounds.
New World Champion O'Connell,
from Slacks Creek, Queensland,
improved her record to 8-2 (5),
while 23-year-old Tshabalala
drops to 8-1-1 (0).
The big World Boxing Federation
doubleheader
