The World Boxing Federation
North American Cruiserweight
title will be on the line when
Bobby Thomas Jr. and Warren
Browning square off in the main
event of a show at the Madison
Civic Center in Madison, West
Virginia on Saturday July 13.
With former undisputed world
heavyweight champion James
“Buster” Douglas reported to be
in attendance on the night, this
is a rematch of their original
meeting this past January that
Thomas won when Browning had to
retire before the third round
with an arm injury.
Bobby Thomas Jr., from nearby
Oak Hill, is the West Virginia
State Champion and brings an
impressive 12-1 (9) professional
record. He turned pro in 2008,
and has not lost since a hand
injury forced him to retire
after two rounds of a fight
against the undefeated Justin
Howes in 2009.
In 2010 Thomas beat Howes (by
then 12-0) in a rematch for the
West Virginia title, and has
since made two successful
defenses. Having beaten the
better opposition, and won the
more significant bouts, Thomas
must be considered the favorite
to win again.
However, Warren Browning is not
coming to lie down. Going in
with a 17-3-1 (12) ledger, and
his only two other losses being
to significant names Ryan Coyne
and Eric Molina in title fights,
the 38-year-old from Mingo
County is no rookie himself. And
he is injury free, and ready to
rumble:
“Everything is fine, and my
training has been going great”,
Browning told Williamson Daily
News recently. A former Marine,
Browning wants to win the WBF
title to hopefully be a role
model for local kids, saying:
“I want to show them that you
can accomplish your goals with a
lot of hard work, no matter
where you are from”.
Billed as “King Of The
Coalfields”, the Bobby Thomas
Jr. vs. Warren Browning rematch
for the vacant World Boxing
Federation North American
Cruiserweight title will be
promoted by Chase Hill of Black
Eye Promotions, in association
with Jerry Thomas. |
