Promociones Soto, headed by
Jesus Soto, has lined up a big
World Boxing Federation
championship doubleheader on
Saturday August 17 at the El
Chamizal arena in Puerto Penasco,
Mexico. It will arguably be the
most significant boxing event in
the city
located in the northwest of
Sonora state, about 100 km from
the Arizona border.
In a rematch, hometown puncher
Javier “El Rebelde” Carrera will
face fellow countryman Augusto
“Veneno” Gamez for the vacant
WBF North American Welterweight
title, while another local
favourite, Linda “La Muneca”
Soto squares off with compatriot
Kareli Lopez for the vacant WBF
Womens Intercontinental Super
Flyweight crown.
Carrera turned professional in
2008 and won his first ten bouts
before losing a decision to
fellow prospect Julio Cesar
Avalos in 2012. He has since
rebounded well with two
victories, his latest a close
majority decision over Gamez,
and enters his first
championship contest with a 12-1
(9) ledger.
In Gamez, 13-13-1 (10), he will
be in with a battletested
veteran who gave him his
toughest fight so far when they
fought this past March, and a
boxer who has fought for, and
won, several titles and shared
the ring with big names such as
Antonio Diaz and Jorge Paez Jr.
26 year old Linda Soto will be
aiming to get back into
contention, coming off a
decision defeat against American
Ava Knight. Spotting a
misleading 5-3 (3) record, she
has only lost to world class
opposition, coming up short
against Jessica Chavez, Jolene
Blackshear and the
aforementioned Knight, all
former or current world
title-holders.
Entering the fight with a close
to identical record of 5-3-1
(1), Kareli Lopez has never
challenged for a title but she
has never the less boxed against
top-notch opposition. In 2012
she defeated Zenny Sotomayor who
went on to challenge for a world
championship, and in her last
two appearances she lost
competitive decisions to
undefeated Jessica Nery Plata
and former world champion Katia
Gutierrez.
The card will also feature an
interesting undercard with
well-matched bouts, most notably
a battle of undefeated prospects
between Light Welterweights
Eliud Ortega and Oscar Magana.
Promociones Soto expects a
sold-out venue will support
local heroes Carrera and Soto in
their careers most important
bouts to date. |
