World Boxing Federation World
Light Welterweight Champion
Zolani Marali will make his
first title defence on Sunday
September 15, when he squares
off with WBF Intercontinental
titlist Mzolisi Yoyo at the
Orient Theatre in East London,
South Africa.
The highly anticipated clash of
local rivals, both from the
Mdantsane Township a few miles
from downtown East London, is
promoted by Xaba
Promotions, and will be
televised live by SuperSports.
Marali, 22-5 (13), won the WBF
World title by dethroning
another South African, Ali
Funeka, in a rematch last
December. Funeka had won their
first bout a year earlier by
disputed split decision, but
Marali put on a great
performance in the sequel to win
on all judges cards.
Mzolisi Yoyo, 21-4 (16),
captured the Intercontinental
Light Welterweight crown with a
second round stoppage of
compatriot Luyanda Jako this
past June, and has since been
calling for a world title shot
and a South African Super Fight
against Marali.
Both fighters have a big
following, and WBF President
Howard Goldberg, who will fly in
from Cape Town to supervise the
affair, is looking forward to
what he sees as a possible
Fight-Of-The-Year candidate:
“This is a contest that South
Africa has been longing for, and
I believe it is going to be an
all out war”, said Goldberg, and
added:
“Two East London heroes going
to-to-toe, in front of fanatical
fans in a great venue and live
on television. It just doesn’t
get any better than that!”
The Zolani Marali vs. Mzolisi
Yoyo WBF World Light
Welterweight title fight is the
main event of a big show staged
to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of Mdantsane
existence.
In the main supporting bout
Xolisani Ndongeni defends his
South African Super
Featherweight title against
Themba Tschicila. A full
undercard of interesting matches
involving some of the area’s
best prospects will complete
what could be a memorable night
of boxing.
