The World Boxing Federation (WBF)
recently appointed experienced
boxing administrator Sam Layne
(pictured) as its official Caribbean
representative, with the goal of
making the WBF more present in
this part of the world in coming
years.
With plenty of media and local
boxers present, Mr. Layne
recently hosted a press
conference in Barbados, where he
is based, unveiling his plans
for the WBF in the Caribbean.
“One of my plans to push the
World Boxing Federation in the
Caribbean, and to help boxing
and boxers here, is to arrange a
WBF Caribbean tournament next
year”, said Layne.
“The finalists of the tournament
will fight for the WBF
International or
Intercontinental title, and the
winner will then hopefully
challenge for the WBF world
championship”.
Layne explained that the area is
best represented by boxers
between 140 Lbs. and 150 Lbs, so
the tournament will be with
boxers between these weights,
and the final will be for a WBF
welterweight (147 Lbs.)
championship.
The new WBF representative also
informed that he plans to
arrange for WBF officials
seminars to help judges and
referees learn and improve
according to international
protocol, and that he has big
hopes for the sport in the
Caribbean.
“We have so much talent here,
and so many good boxing people.
All we need to do is to provide
the opportunities”, said Layne.
The plan is that the tournament
will start some time during the
first half of 2014.
