Bobby Thomas Jr. is set for his
second crack at the vacant World
Boxing Federation (WBF) North
American Cruiserweight title on
Saturday March 29, when he takes
on Eric Watkins at the Beckley
Convention Center in Beckley,
West Virginia.
Thomas, 13-2-1 (9), fought
Warren Browning for the same
title last July, a fight that
ended in a draw, and the pair
was supposed to go at it again.
However, Browning was forced to
pull out due to illness, and in
comes Watkins, a West Virginia
local like Thomas.
27-year-old Eric Watkins is
known as “The One Armed Bandit”,
a nickname he earned in his
professional debut when he broke
his left arm early in the bout,
but refused to quit and went on
to win on points with the use of
only his right arm.
He turned professional in 2010,
and has since compiled a 10-6-1
(5) ledger. Five of his six
losses have come against
undefeated opponents with a
combined record of 50-0, one of
which was a decision to current
top contender Sean Monaghan
(20-0, 13 KOs).
Having won the West Virginia
title at both Cruiserweight and
Heavyweight since making his
paid debut in 2008, Bobby Thomas
Jr. (32) is hoping that his
second chance at reaching the
next level, and taking home the
WBF belt, will be his lucky one.
With nothing to lose, accepting
the fight at relatively short
notice, Eric Watkins believes
this is his big opportunity to
shine, and he will surely be
aiming to make the most of it.
Both boxers can punch, both will
come to win, and it shapes up to
be an interesting night in
Beckley.
The fight is presented by West
Virginia Sports Promotions,
headed by Jerry Thomas.
