It was today announced at a big press conference in Ljubljana that Slovenia’s former IBF World Welterweight champion Jan Zaveck, AKA Dejan Zavec, will attempt to become a two-weight world titlist when he challenges reigning WBF World Super Welterweight ruler Sasha Yengoyan on April 11 at Tabor Hall in Maribor.

Zaveck, 34-3 (19), who spend much of his professional career in Germany where he made his debut in 2003, won the IBF crown in 2009 in South Africa, beating Isaac Hlatshwayo, and made three successful defenses before losing it to Andre Berto in America in 2011.

Now, three and a half years later, he gets a chance to win a second world championship in his home-country, and, while he is already working out at the Dejan Zavec Gym in Ptuj, he plans to leave no stone unturned in his preparations, and travels to Germany this coming Monday to start full training camp with coach Dirk Dzemski.

This is a very hard fight for me”, said Zavec at the press conference. “But it is a massive opportunity, and I am very pleased that I can now hopefully become world champion again by defeating one of the best in the world.”

I don’t see any weaknesses in Yengoyan, and he is very unpredictable and aggressive. I am prepared for the fact that he is taller than me, and I will have to be at my best and fight smart to beat him.”

Armenian-born Belgian Sasha Yengoyan, 31-1-1 (21), will be making his first defense of the WBF world title he won last October in his hometown Ghent, dethroning then title-holder Anderson Clayton, and is proving to be a true world champion by agreeing to fight in Zaveck´s back-yard.

The fight will be televised by TVSLO Sport, and promoter Tomaz Barada revealed that around 4500 tickets, priced 20, 25, 35 and 50 Euros, will go on sale Monday March 2nd, and that a sell-out crowd is realistic:

We have been very lucky to attract a quality world champion such as Yengoyan to Slovenia”, said Barada. “This is a great success, but also a very demanding task for Dejan. Also, its a very expensive event to put together, but if Dejan wins it will all be worth it.”
