Sarasota locals, Heavyweight
China Smith and Super
Middleweight Aaron Jaco are set
to co-headline a World Boxing
Federation (WBF) championship
doubleheader on Friday April 3
at the Robarts Arena in
Sarasota, Florida.
Billed as “Making History”, the
show is presented by Marc
Anthony Roman and Perfect Energy
Sports, with a big crowd
expected at the 3500 seat venue.
WBF North American Heavyweight
Champion China “The Dragon”
Smith, 35-4 (27), will be making
his first title-defense in a
rematch with the man he won it
against, Mike Sheppard, 22-18-1
(9) from Palestine, West
Virginia.
Their original encounter last
June in Tampa, won by Smith on
points, was one of the best
Heavyweight bouts in Florida in
years, and the second go-around
is also expected to be fireworks
from start to finish.
“This
is a launching pad to bring
boxing to Sarasota,” said Smith
at a recent press conference
held at Sarasota Lamborghini.
“It’s
been a dream of mine to have my
teammates and local fighters on
the same bill. We don’t want to
have just one fight, we want to
do big things in Sarasota.”
In the second WBF title fight of
the show, Aaron “The Jedi” Jaco,
17-3 (6), will be challenging
for the vacant North American
Super Middleweight title against
Norfolk, Virginia´s Frankie
Filippone, 16-5-1 (3).
Southpaw Filippone, nicknamed
“The Freight-Train”, is coming
down in weight after losing a
close decision to Shawn Miller
for the Light Heavyweight
version last August.
Jaco, on the comeback trail
after losing to former world
champion Kelly Pavlik in 2012,
has won two fights since
returning from a nineteen month
lay-off.
In Filippone he will be stepping
up his level of competition, and
can expect a tough fight against
an opponent who is also looking
to resurrect his career with a
big victory.
The entire event can be watched
world-wide, live and for free,
