Reigning World Boxing Federation
(WBF) World Super Welterweight
Champion Sasha Yengoyan has
arrived in Maribor, Slovenia
where he will defend his title
at the Tabor Arena against
former Welterweight World
Champion (IBF) Jan Zavec on
Saturday night, April 11.
Yengoyan, 31-1-1 (21), born in
Armenia but now residing and
fighting out of Belgium, will be
making his first defense of the
title he won last October when
he impressively dominated and
stopped then champion Anderson
Clayton from Brazil.
Zavec, 34-3 (19), a big hero in
his native Slovenia, will be
challenging for his first world
championship since losing the
IBF Welterweight crown on an
eye-injury to American Andre
Berto in 2011, and is coming off
two victories since a decision
defeat to current WBA World
Welterweight Champion Keith
Thurman in 2013.
The defending champion has no
problem fighting in Zavec´s
home-country, and sees it as
another opportunity for him to
further
establish his name on the
world scene:
“I
know Zavec is a very good boxer,
a very respected name in the
sport, and its an honor for me
to fight him. It will be a hard
and good fight, but of course I
expect to win, and doing it in
Maribor will be very nice.
Maribor is a beautiful city.”
Yengoyan, who´s boxing idol is
legendary former world
heavyweight champion Mike Tyson,
is hoping that beating a big
name such as Zavec will open new
doors for him, saying:
“I
am always aiming at going to the
next level, and when I beat
Zavec I hope that it can lead to
even bigger fights in the USA.
He will not have to run after
me, I plan to be there, right in
front of him, from the first
second to the last second, so it
should be an exiting fight, and
a great victory for me.”
Promoted by Tomaz Barada, the
Sasha Yengoyan vs. Jan Zavec WBF
World Super Welterweight title
fight will be televised live by
TVSLO Sport, and a sell-out
crowd of around 4500 spectators
is expected at the Tabor Arena
in Maribor.
