Two championship fights
involving the World Boxing
Federation (WBF) took place on
Saturday night, May 30, as
Mischa Nigg won the vacant WBF
International Super Middleweight
title, and Nina Stojanovic
captured the Unified Womens
World Super Flyweight crown.
In Switzerland, in front of a
packed and sold-out Barensaal in
Worb, local hero Nigg came
through his biggest test so far
in impressive fashion as he
over-powered game but out-gunned
co-challenger Ramazi
Gogichashvili from Georgia in
four rounds.
Promoted by
Boxteam Thun Oberland in
association with Boxing Kings,
Nigg proved the much stronger
man from the start and marched
forward with power-punches from
both hands. Gogichashvili proved
to be a good boxer, and
occasionally had some success
with his sharp left hook, but
couldn’t keep Nigg at bay.
After
suffering a bloody nose in the
first round Nigg started to work
well to the body, and in round
four he send Gogichahsvili to
the canvas twice with
well-placed body-shots. The
second knock-down ended the
fight at 2:00 of the round, as
referee Fabian Guggenheim waved
it off.
The new WBF International
champion, 27-years old and a pro
for just over two years,
improved his professional record
to
9-1 (8), while
Gogichashvili, the younger man
by seven years but much more
experienced boxer, drops to
17-6-2 (8).
Eva Voraberger won the WBF and
WIBF World Super Flyweight
titles in June of last year, and
made one successful defence
before being declared the
Unified Womens World champion
when the WBF launched its
cooperation with the WIBF and
GBU last March, and merged the
three championships into the
most prestigious title in female
boxing.
But, fighting at the
Reinhold-Heidinger-Sporthalle in
Leibnitz, the Austrian lost the
unified title in her first
defence, as 23-year-old
challenger Nina Stojanovic from
Serbia proved too sharp and
hungry and won by split
decision.
Stojanovic looked to be on a
mission, and got the better of
most of the exchanges, and after
ten rounds of boxing judges
Tamas Sasvari and Ernst
Salzgeber both had her winning
by 97-93 and 97-94 respectively,
while judge Rainer Gottwald
scored it 97-95 in favor of
Voraberger.
With the victory, Stojanovic
gatecrashes the scene in her
first title fight and takes her
undefeated record to 8-0 (3).
Voraberger, only 25 years old
and with plenty of time to come
back, falls to 19-4 (9). The
fight was promoted by Boxteam
Vienna.
