Reigning World Boxing Federation
(WBF) World Super Welterweight
Champion Jan Zaveck, 35-3 (19),
has set his sights on the
biggest fights possible in his
division, and is hoping to land
unification bouts with champions
from the other major sanctioning
bodies.
The Slovenian, who won the WBF
world title by dethroning Sasha
Yengoyan by unanimous decision
this past April, is now enjoying
the summer while considering his
options, but if he has his way
he will return to the ring this
autumn against another world
champion.
“I
have huge respect for all the
super welterweight world
champions, but I am sure that I
could challenge them, offer an
exciting fight and come from the
bout victorious”, says Zaveck of
his fellow Super Welterweight
titlists Cornelius Bundrage
(IBF), Erislandy Lara (WBA),
Demetrius Andrade (WBO), and
even Floyd Mayweather (WBC).
“There
is no question about me wanting
to fight them. I never hide from
any opponent, and I went to
South Africa to win the IBF
(world Welterweight title) and
later to the USA to defend it,
so risk has never been a concern
for me.”
Zaveck captured the IBF
Welterweight crown in 2009 by
stopping Isaac Hlatshwayo in
Johannesburg, and went on to
make three successful defenses
before losing it to Andre Berto
in 2011 when an injury caused by
a head-but ended the fight
between round five and six.
“I
have never been down in my
career, and my only real
justified defeat was on points
against (current WBA World
Welterweight Champion) Keith
Thurman. I believe I have a
place among the elite, I want to
add to my legacy and I hope the
other world champions will not
hide from me.”
Zaveck is hoping to know the
name of his next opponent inside
a month or so, and if a
unification fight is not
possible he will be looking to
defend his WBF world title
against the best available
challenger, possibly again in
front of a sold-out crowd in
Maribor.
