The recent armament of the World
Boxing Federation all over the
globe has reached a new peak
with Korea now in the spotlight
for the Asia-Pacific region.
Having joined the WBFed as the
new Asia-Pacific Continental
Coordinator (succeeding
Australian Ian McLeish) is
50-year-old Jung Ho Moon, the
Executive Officer of the Korea
Boxing Association (KBA), with
32-year-old Hoon Lee assuming
the position of Regional
Representative for East Asia.
Moon has been close to the sport
of boxing basically all his
life, what with his father being
a famous national champion.
However, it was against his
father’s expressed wish that
Moon himself laced on the gloves
to embark on a 13-year amateur
career, which culminated with
six Korean titles. Instead of
turning pro himself, Moon began
coaching, managing the family
gym and got himself a PhD in
physical education from Kyongki
University. In 1985, he began
managing fighters with no little
success, as 18 Korean champions,
12 OPBF champions and and two
world champions pay testimony
to.
The new East Asia Representative
of the World Boxing Federation,
Hoon Lee, is aiming to cooperate
closely with the new
Asia-Pacific Coordinator Moon,
as he has residencies outside of
Seoul in Fukuoka, Japan and
Bangkok, Thailand. Due to being
educated in these countries as
well as being enlisted in no
less than three American
universities for 10 years, Lee
is multilingual. He was born and
raised in Thailand before his
family migrated to Japan prior
to him studying in the United
States. His love for boxing took
him even into the ring last
year, where he won a debut fight
as a professional cruiserweight!
World Boxing Federation
President Howard Goldberg and
Executive Director Olaf
Schroeder warmly welcomed Moon
and Lee into the ever-growing
WBFed family, expecting business
in the Asia-Pacific region to
increase shortly. “I will surely
pay a visit to Korea as soon as
my schedule allows me to,” said
Goldberg, before revealing: “But
I can’t promise that it will
already happen for the first
WBFed championship bout in Korea
in September.” |
