While other sanctioning
organizations prefer to increase
the number of their titles they
offer, the World Boxing
Federation tries to push against
this harmful trend.
In this sense, the WBF has now
greatly enhanced the value of
its Intercontinental and
International titles by
implementing a new rule that
leads directly to a shot at the
world championship.
In short, Intercontinental
champions become mandatory world
title challengers after one
successful defense, while the
same feat takes two successful
defenses for International
champions (this refers to both
male and female champions, of
course).
The same achievement is possible
for a regional WBF champion with
three successful title defenses.
“Rather
than adding a useless Silver,
Bronze or Platinum title, the
WBF Board in unison with our
Continental Chairmen simply
chose to give more meaning to
our already existing titles,”
explains Vice President Torben
Seemann Hansen from Denmark, and
added, “When we promised not to
invade the sport with even more
so-called titles, we intended to
keep our word.”
