World Boxing Federation (WBF)
World Light Heavyweight Champion
Tony Averlant will make his
second title-defense on Friday
February 19, when he takes on
Kenyan challenger Daniel
Wanyonyi at the Palais Des
Sports in his hometown of
Saint-Quentin, France.
Averlant, 22-8-2 (4), won the
title with a unanimous decision
over Germany´s Serdar Sahin in
May 2014, and retained the crown
by out-pointing American Shawn
Miller last March. He has since
been sidelined with injuries but
returned to the ring in November
with a non-title fight victory.
Now he is ready to step things
up again, and in Wanyonyi, who
also spots a record of 22-8-2
but has stopped eighteen of his
foes, he will not be in for an
easy ride. The 32-year-old from
Nairobi has declared his
intentions of not leaving things
up to the judges on fight-night,
saying:
“This
is my life’s biggest
opportunity, and I cant let it
go to waste. I will knock
Averlant out, and I will take
the WBF world title back to
Kenya and make my people proud!”
Wanyonyi turned professional in
2007, and won the Kenyan
national title in 2012. In 2013
he added the East & Central
Africa title, and in 2014 he
traveled to Congo to defeat
undefeated local hero Matamba
Postolo (18-0) to win the
African Boxing Union crown.
Having gone into his opponents
country before and emerged
victorious, Wanyonyi is not the
slightest concerned that
Averlant has an advantage in the
home crowd:
“It
is as the saying goes, the crowd
will not be doing the fighting
for him. In the ring it is just
me and him, and when I won the
ABU title the crowd was also
cheering for my opponent. That
didn’t help him at all, and the
crowd will not be able to save
Averlant from going down
either.”
Tony Averlant vs. Daniel
Wanyonyi will be promoted by
Pascal Cordier.
