Former South American champion
Martin Antonio Coggi, son of
Argentinean great Juan Martin
Coggi, is set to fight Frenchman
Christopher Sebire for the
vacant World Boxing Federation
(WBF) World Light Welterweight
title on June 11 in France.
The signing of the contract took
place in the Coggi family home,
with memorabilia from Seniors
legendary career decorating the
living-room walls, and Junior,
who has a fine 33-6-3 (16)
professional record, is hoping
that this will be a good omen
for him to emulate his father
and win a world title in the
same division.
Nicknamed “Látigo” (The Whip),
Juan Martin Coggi retired from
the ring in 1999 after seventeen
years as a pro with a fantastic
75-5-2 (44) ledger, having won
the WBA world title three times
(1987, 1993 and 1996) and made
ten successful defenses
combined.
During his career he defeated
opponents such as Patrizio Oliva
(48-0), Sang-Ho Lee (47-1),
Akinobu Hiranaka (17-0), Jose
Luis Ramirez (102-8), Hiroyuki
Sakamoto (19-0) and Frankie
Randall (52-3-1), and was never
afraid to venture outside his
native country for fights.
The Argentinean icon will train
his son for the WBF world title
fight, and travel with him to
France where he himself fought
five times. In 1990 Juan Martin
outclassed Jose Luis Ramirez in
a WBA title-defense in France,
and they will be looking for
Martin Antonio to do a similar
job on Sebire, 24-9-1 (9),
this coming June 11.
A southpaw like his father,
Martin Antonio has been a pro
for more than ten years and won
several regional titles. This
will be his first world
championship bout, and the
Coggi-duo plans to leave no
stone unturned in their efforts
to make the most of the
opportunity and bring another
world title back to Argentina,
and their family.
