Germany’s Deniz Ilbay and Oscar
Chauke from South Africa went
into the lions den and prevailed
on Saturday night, June 25, when
they defeated local favorites to
win World Boxing Federation
(WBF) titles at the Indoor Sport
Complex in Walvis Bay, Namibia.
21-year-old Ilbay from Cologne
captured the vacant WBF World
Welterweight title by split
decision after twelve rounds
against Bethuel Ushona (34), and
improved his professional record
to 16-1 (8). The local man, a
pro since 2002, drops to 34-5-1
(9).
Judges Jean-Marcel Nartz of
Germany and Aubrey Rassie
Erasmus of South Africa scored
the fight 115-113 and 117-111
for the visitor, while Ricky
Tshabalala from Namibia had it
118-110 for Ushona. Referee in
charge of the action was Timo
Haikonda.
Immediately after the fight,
promoter Kriata Kamanya lodged a
protest of the decision with the
WBF, which is currently under
review.
Experienced and battle-tested
Oscar “Golden Boy” Chauke, now
35-11-3 (11), took home the
vacant WBF Intercontinental
Super Featherweight crown, as he
floored Abraham Ndauendapo, 14-3
(4), in the ninth round en-route
to a split verdict.
Scores were 115-112 (Timo
Haikonda) and 114-113
(Jean-Marcel Nartz) for Chauke,
and 117-112 (Aubrey Rassie
Erasmus) for Ndauendapo. Referee
was Ricky Tshabalala.
Labeled as the Harambee Coastal
Boxing Bonanza, the Ushona vs.
Ilbay and Ndauendapo vs. Chauke
World Boxing Federation (WBF)
championship double-header was
the two main attractions of a
fine show promoted by Salute
Boxing Academy.
