Denis Simcic, now an impressive
24-1 (14), won his first
international title as a pro on
Saturday night, September 4, in
front of 14.000 frantic fans in
Ljubljana, Slovenia, when he
clinched the vacant World Boxing
Federation International light
heavyweight crown with a 9th
round KO over Romanian Istvan
Varga.
While the majority of the
spectators turned out to watch
Slovenia's national hero Jan
Zaveck defend his IBF
welterweight belt, Simcic,
though born in Munich, was the
only other Slovenian on this SES
Boxing event and thus sure of
the audience' support. Push
forward by the gigantic turnout
Simcic started the scheduled
10-rounder in an offensive
style, attacking Varga with fast
combinations.
Though Varga, six years Simcic'
senior at 35, had the longer
reach, the local favorite
managed to dive into range time
and again, often landing shots
to the head, while the
Romanian's efforts more often
than not were nullified by
Simcic' guard. The longer the
fight went, the more Simcic
dominated, until finally Varga
went down from a big left hook,
prompting German referee Holger
Wiemann to stop the fight at
2:25 of the penultimate round. |
