Polish boxing got a new world
champion on Saturday night,
September 10, when Przemyslaw
Opalach beat Kenyan Daniel
Wanyonyi for the vacant World
Boxing Federation (WBF) World
Super Middleweight title at
Hala-Basen in the city of
Goldap.
Fighting on a show televised in
Poland by Orange Sport, Opalach
and Wanyonyi both started
tentatively, trying to find
openings, but before long the
popular local man found his
range and took over the
initiative and momentum of the
fight.
Just before the bell to end the
first round, Opalach landed a
decent shot which send Wanyonyi
down, but he beat the count of
referee Zbigniew Lagosz without
too much trouble. But, it would
be a sign of things to come as
Opalach was in full control of
the second round, which he also
won clearly.
In round three Opalach floored
Wanyonyi three times, prompting
referee Lagosz to stop the
Kenyan, who earlier this year
lost on points to Tony Averlant
in a challenge for the WBF World
Light Heavyweight title. Time of
TKO was 1:08 of round three.
Having made his professional
debut in 2011, and won several
regional titles while fighting
in places such as Germany,
Ghana, Turkey and the USA, the
new WBF World Champion improved
his record to 23-2 (19), while
Wanyonyi drops to 23-10-2 (19).
