Unbeaten Super Bantamweight
Unathi Myekeni extended her
unbeaten record to 8 - 0
claiming the World Boxing
Federation's woman's title in a
titanic battle against the young
Renata Szebeledi of Hungary on
Sunday September 12.
Szebeledi, a young petite
extremely beautiful young lady
looked anything but a boxer when
she climbed into the ring at the
Mdantsane Indoor Arena in East
London, South Africa. The fans
thought she would be an easy foe
for the talented Myekeni.
Szebeledi proved everyone in the
packed hall wrong putting up a
fantastic performance going toe
to toe with Myekeni for the full
ten rounds.
Both fighters received a
standing ovation after the
fight, and even though their
hero had earned a full world
title for East London, it was
Szebeledi who was embraced by
the crowd. Myekeni won a tough
but deserved decision and a
rematch would definitely pull in
the crowds.
Noni Tenge also fought a game
Hungarian lady in undefeated
Ilka Agota. The problem for
Agota was that she was up
against probably the best woman
welterweight in the world.
Tenge, who spars with male South
African champions, was simply
too strong, talented and deadly
for the young Agota.
Agota showed tremendous courage
when floored by a vicious left
hook in round five, and could
easily have stayed down to
prevent further punishment. Like
a true warrior, Agota got up and
fought valiantly but to no
avail, as the world champion
pummeled her against the ropes
forcing referee Siya Vabaza to
call it quits in round 6.
Special mention must be made of
Koko Godlo the promoter and head
of KK Promotions for not only
putting on an excellent
tournament, but also for looking
after the boxers so well and
even hosting them at his house
for an outstanding lunch after
the weigh in. |
