The future of the once # 1 lady
fighter from France and the
world, Myriam Lamare, is hanging
in the balance, or perhaps on
her way to new glory when she
takes on Lucia Morelli on Nov. 6 next
at the Complex Sportif du Val de
l’Arc of Aix-en-Provence, when
Lamare puts her WBF
world light-welterweight title
on the line.
The St. Denis born, but
Marseille based 35-year-old
started seven years ago to punch
for pay. Just 13 month later and
with 7 straight wins (3 inside)
she captured the WBA
light-welter championship
beating American Eliza Olson as
clear as can be: three times 100
– 90! Between 2004 and 2006 she
had no less than 5 successful
defences (3 inside), until she
got side tracked by fellow
Française Anne Sophie Mathis and
lost.
After an unsuccessful rematch,
Lamare bounced back with 3
inside wins before she lost to
Holly Holms. However in her very
last fight, she straightened out
a few things by winning the
vacant WBF crown by a near shut
out points win over Ann
Saccurato, the then reigning WBC
light-welterweight champion, in
what was later voted "WBF Female
Fight of the Year 2009".
With her 17 win (9 inside) and 3
losses (1 inside) record, Lamare
must be the favourite against
her Italian born (Puglia) ,
German (Offenburg) based
challenger Morelli, who has 14
wins (7 inside), 1 loss and 1 NC.
However those who are “in the
know” will point out that plain
numbers don’t make champions.
Best example: when Lamare fought
the formidable Jane Couch in
2005, the English girl had 33
fights under her belt against
Lamare only 10. Yet the French
lady stopped her in three
sensational rounds and lifted
the roof of the huge Palais
Omnisport Bercy.
The 31 year old Morelli is still
a more or less an unknown
commodity, even if she, with 12
wins (6 inside) under her belt
and with the German title in her
possession, challenged Cecilia
Breakhus last year for the WBC/WBA
welterweight title. Since then
she got back into the right
grove with 2 wins (1 inside).
The challenger may gamble on the
fact that the champion might not
be as strong as before, or show
signs of wear and tear, but
that’s something she’ll only
find out once she has entered
the square circle in Aix-les-Bains
on November 6. |
