World Boxing Federation Fighter
of the Year, super middleweight
world champion William Gare,
showed his true ability with a
technically flawless and
disciplined effort outpointing
the dangerous Roland Francis who
had recently won the WBF African
cruiserweight title.
Francis had shed plenty of
weight and looked strong at the
weigh in and showed courage and
grit against one of the best
world champions South Africa has
ever produced. After a lengthy
lay off, there was expectation
of ring rust from Gare, but this
simply was not the case, as Gare
dominated the dangerous
Francis.
Francis, normally a come forward
fighter who likes to throw
haymakers with both hands
surprised as he boxed for most
of the fight, catching Gare
several times with a straight
and tight left jab.
In the end Gare was simply far
too good and was a clear winner
in a technical fight rather than
the expected brawl.
Gare is now unbeaten in his last
six including wins over former
WBA world champ Maselino Masoe,
current WBA world champ
Rigoberto Alvarez and also the
highly rated Les Sherrington
from Australia.
The fight was well refereed by
Eddie Marshall, and the judges
Neville Hotz, Philip Durandt and
Simon Mokadi scored 116 - 112,
117 - 111 and 118 - 110. The
fight was supervised by Archie
Jonas under the watchful eye of
WBF President Howard Goldberg. |
