Australian Derek Milham, world
class referee and long-time top
boxing administrator, was today
welcomed by WBF president Howard
Goldberg as a member of the
World Boxing Federation staff,
having accepted responsibilities
for the newly created office of
Continental Coordinator for
Oceania.
The 64-year-old Milham, who
lives in Queensland, brings a
wealth of administrative
experience to the WBF, having
held positions as president of
the Australian National Boxing
Federation (ANBF) as well as
president of the Oceanic Boxing
Association (OBA) and vice
president of the Pan Asian
Boxing Association (PABA),
amongst others, in his
distinguished career in the
sport.
However, he gained worldwide
fame as a top-class referee,
having been the third man in the
ring for many world
championships all over the
globe. Milham’s high point in
almost 20 years as the neutral
man certainly was refereeing the
WBA world heavyweight
championship between Nikolay
Valuev and John Ruiz in 2008 in
Germany.
“I am delighted at being
afforded the opportunity to join
the WBF team,” Milham said upon
his appointment, “It is so
important to have the
cooperation and support of such
a well administered sanctioning
organization within the Oceania
region. The boxing industry
participants in the region can
look forward to the
international competition and
exposure that linking up with
the WBF will deliver, as we work
together for the betterment of
boxing in the Oceania region.” |
