Mexican contender Victor
Betancourt will get a second
chance to win a World Boxing
Federation (WBF) title when he
takes on Saul “Temible” Banos
for the vacant WBF Mexican Super
Featherweight title on Saturday
September 29 in Sonora.
Betancourt, 24-2 (12), lost a
fight for the WBF
Intercontinental Featherweight
crown to compatriot Sergio Lopez
in August of 2014, but has since
rebounded very well and won
eight of his last nine outings,
six of them inside the distance.
His only set-back in this period
was a technical decision defeat
to Italy´s undefeated former
European titlist and IBO World
Champion Emiliano Marsili
(35-0-1) this past February in
Rome. But Betancourt also proved
in that fight that he can
compete at a high level.
For Banos, 14-9-2 (7), the
younger man by one year at 26,
it will also be his second crack
at a WBF championship. In 2015
he came up short in a challenge
for the International Super
Bantamweight title, losing to
Rafael Reyes.
Certainly the underdog in this
fight, Banos has little to lose
and can firmly resurrect his
career should he be able to
emerge victorious. Betancourt on
the other hand must win if he is
to have any realistic hopes of
one day challenging for world
honours.
