Former World Lightweight Champion, and current World Boxing Federation (WBF) Mexican Welterweight Champion, Miguel “El Titere” Vazquez, 40-6 (15), is still only thirty-one years old, but already considered a veteran campaigner.

In the second installment of our feature series titled “The Champ”, we offer some miscellaneous insight and information on...The Champ!

- Miguel Ángel Vásquez Bautista was born in Guadalajara (on January 6, 1987), the same city which produced other stars such as Abner Mares and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

- His nickname, “El Titera”, means “The Puppet”.

- At the urging of his father, Vazquez started boxing at twelve, and compiled a record of 70-10 as an amateur. He was trained by his father from the start and until the age of twenty-one.

- In his professional debut (January 20, 2006), two weeks after his nineteenth birthday, Vasquez lost a split decision over four rounds at Light Welterweight to the aforementioned “Canelo”, now the worlds number-one Middleweight, who at the time was 2-0 and not yet sixteen.

- In his first six bouts, Vazquez faced opponents who was a combined 10-0. He went 5-1 against them, losing only to Alvarez.

- So far, Vazquez is 16-4 against undefeated opponents. He has beaten the likes of Breidis Prescott (21-0), Leonardo Zappavigna (25-0), Mercito Gesta (26-0-1) and Denis Shafikov (33-0-1), but come up short against Alvarez twice, soon-to-be Hall of Famer Timothy Bradley (20-0), and Josh Taylor (10-0). Taylor is the only man to stop Vasquez.

- Vasquez has boxed as a professional in five different countries: Nicaragua, USA, China, Scotland and of course Mexico.

- In 2008 he got a rematch with “Canelo”, this time at welterweight. Vaszquez was 21-1 at the time, while Alvarez had improved his run to 19-0-1. In the second go-around, Alvarez won a unanimous decision over ten rounds, on a card where all SIX of his brothers also boxed. The Alvarez family went 4-3 that night.

- Vazquez won the IBF World Lightweight title in 2010, defeating South Korean Ji-Hoon Kim, and made six defenses before losing his crown by split decision to Mickey Bey in September of 2014 on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas.

- Floyd Mayweather is Vazquez´ favorite fighter to watch, along with Tommy Hearns and Bernard Hopkins.
