After an exhilarating fight in
Dundee, South Africa, Gcina Makhoba
was declared the new World Boxing
Federation (WBF) World Super
Flyweight champion on Saturday
night, December 3, defeating
Filipino Robert Paradero for the
vacant title.
Paradero silenced the patriotic
crowd when he dropped Makhoba with a
big right hand inside the first
minute, but the local man came back
strong and returned the favor
shortly after, flooring the visitor
to even things up.
The action continued in round two,
with both men landing hard punches,
and in round three Makhoba scored
another knockdown to edge in front.
From that point on both men would
stay on their feet, but it continued
to be back and forth for nine more
brutal rounds.
At the conclusion, judges Edward
Marshall and Pumeza Zinakile both
scored it 116-111, while judge Sipho
Zondo had it 117-112, all for
Makhoba.
The new WBF world champion improved
his professional record to 9-1-1
(3). Paradero, coming up short in
his third world championship
opportunity after also losing two
bids for WBA titles, drops to 18-4-1
(12).
Also on Saturday night, in Vienna,
Austria, a fight between Michaela
Kotaskova and Mahjouba Oubtil, with
the vacant WBF Womens
Intercontinental Welterweight title
at stake, ended in a majority draw.
After a very even fight, judges
Rainer Schwarz and Gerhard Sigl
scored it five rounds each, 95-95,
overruling the
96-94 score for Kotaskova from judge
Norbert Duernberger.
From the Czech Republic but based in
Austria, Kotaskova´s record is now
2-0-2, and Oubtil, a Moroccan
fighting out of Italy, goes to 4-2-1
(1).
