Two reigning World Boxing Federation
(WBF) champions successfully
defended their titles on Saturday,
October 25, in South Africa.
In Upington, WBF All Africa Light
Heavyweight champion Bonginkosi
Nhlapo had all he could handle with
former WBF All Africa Super
Middleweight titlist Jimmy Mabundji,
but prevailed.
It was an excellent fight with back
and forth action, and both boxers
were rewarded with extra purse-money
for their huge efforts.
After ten rounds of excitement,
Nhlapo, who improved to 5-3-1 (1),
was declared the winner by unanimous
decision by scores of 96-94. 97-93
and 100-92. Mabundji is now 10-11
(8).
WBF International Bantamweight
champion Asekho Nocele took his pro
record to 9-0 (6) when he defeated
late substitute Saul Hlongwani, 5-12
(3), in Cape Town.
Hlongwani may have taken the fight
on short notice, but he came to win
and pushed the hot prospect in every
round.
While all three judges had it 100-90
after ten rounds of boxing, the
scores don't tell an accurate story,
as it was always competitive.
Nocele showed why he is considered
one of the most promising boxers in
South Africa, and Hlongwani, who has
never been stopped, showed why he is
considered one of the toughest.
