May 2 - 2010:
The third day of the inaugral
World Boxing Federation
convention actually started in
the early hours of the morning,
as many delegates joined at 2.30
am local Albanian time to watch
the live transmission of the
Floyd Mayweather vs Shane Mosley
fight from the US on a large
screen set up by the hosting
Tirana International Hotel.
Naturally the daily proceedings
started later when at noon time
the WBFed Executives and
delegates participated in the
official opening of the first
professional boxing gym in
Tirana. Set up by WBFed Honory
President Ylli Ndroqi, the
state-of-the-art gym offers
topmost facilities for boxers
and the opening ceremony was
televised live on Ora News.
The evening saw the biggest-ever
boxing event in Albanian
history, with national superstar
Kreshnik 'The Eagle' Qato
successfully defending his WBFed
world middleweight crown for the
third time in a hot-tempered
encounter with Argentine
challenger Esteban Waldemar
Ponce (full fight card report to
follow on this page). The
sold-out crowd was standing on
their feet and celebrated their
hero, while the World Boxing
Federation was proud to become
part of Albanian sports history.
